Trouble and The First Couple

Kellybelle is falling in love:

Was it me, or was the President trying to sneak in a little slow-dragging at the Neighborhood Ball last night? LOL, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love their love. Can you have a crush on a couple? (Not like that, clean your mind.)

... I will strangle any woman who comes near him with impure thoughts.

Our new president and First Lady do make a striking couple. No disputing that. By comparison, the Obamas make the Huxtables look like a pair of middle-class schlubs.

But I need to ask a question, something that I've joked about on the slick over the past few months: is there any married man in recent history who will be challenged to stay faithful more than President Obama?

In no way do I mean to impugn the character or fidelity of the man. But, in the end, President Obama is a man. No less than Michelle Obama has occasionally reminded us of her husband's relative normality: "He's a gifted man, but in the end, he's just a man."

He's also a man in possession of an unusual amount of power, celebrity, intelligence, good looks, charm, etc etc etc. President Obama is the Derek Jeter of politics or, more precisely, Derek Jeter is the President Obama of baseball.

And this worries me because the stakes have never been so high. Unfortunately, President Obama will be allowed no slip-ups, no mulligans and certainly no Lewinskys. Eliot Spitzer got off easy compared to what Obama might face in a similar situation.

Michelle is a lot of woman, no doubt. But I'm hoping Obama finds some sort of release for all the, uh, challenges facing him over the next four years. Can we publicly fund some sort of White House porn collection through his Web site or something?

Until we can figure this all out, enjoy one of the most poignant moments from the Obamas' night of ball-hopping. Gotta love Beyonce.

I agree. Few men will have as many female admirers as President Obama (still fun to type that). BUT, if you saw the look in his eyes when he went from the traditional dance to the two hands on the hips grip, you know what he's going to do: he's going to say no thanks to the flying panties, bid his admirers adieu, and go home and take out his frustrations on the Mrs. In the good way.

I can only hope they had time to reinforce the beds in that joint. And the White House speakers will be blasting "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" on repeat, son.

Jack, I hope you're right.

And, if the Obamas really want, they might be able to get Stevie to actually play that joint live in the Lincoln Bedroom while they perform the adult arts.

On another note, "I Believe..." is such a great but sad song. One of my favorites from Stevie ... oops. I shouldn't do that to myself.

If I tried to narrow it down to a top 10 for Mr. Wonder, I might blow out a fuse in my mind.

I can't wait for you to put up your list of Best Stevie songs up. "I Was Made To Love Her" is a personal fave.

What makes you think that "I Believe..." is so sad? I'm not disputing your feelings, but to me it comes off hopeful. And the party vibe it takes on at the end is killer.

That's a good question. It's the first time I've actually had to put these thoughts to keyboard.

I always thought Stevie was making a final plea to a lover that was preparing to walk out on him. Like, she's at the door and he caught up to her right as she was about to leave.

"... life began, then was done/
now I stare into a cold and empty well."

and

"what has been, must never end/
and with the strength we have won't be erased."

But I dunno. Maybe I was influenced too much by "High Fidelity." You're right about the end. One of the many reasons I love Stevie - he just had a gift for artfully switching things up in the middle of his songs. It's almost like two different songs in one, you know?

And I'll sleep on that Stevie list. I might actually give it a go. But, wow, what a task. I'd almost feel like I'm on the other end of a Brian Billick rant - "It's inappropriate, and you're not qualified."
