The last days of 12 Play

Fifteen years ago, around this time of year, R Kelly released "12 Play" and I pretty much lost my mind.

I was mesmerized by the "Bump N' Grind" dancers (who wore the miner helmets with lights on them in the video). My football uniform number as a high school senior was No. 12. The first e-mail address I ever had - a year later - was jda12play@hotmail.com.

To this day, my e-mail address has the number 12 in it. If and when I walk down the aisle, "Homie Lover Friend" (UPDATE: the remix from "A Low Down Dirty Shame" soundtrack, of course) might be the song that accompanies the wedding march. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I wear a size 12 shoe.

But, at some point, I had to face facts: R Kelly is something of a creep. Evidence?

When asked if he liked teenage girls, Kelly replied: "When you say teenage, how — how old are we talkin' ... 19?"

"I have some 19-year-old friends," he added. "But I don't like anybody illegal, if that's what we're talking about, underage."

(Sigh). But it's not like we weren't warned, a looooong time ago. On that same wonderful "12 Play" album, he did - presumably with a lecherous grin - include a song titled "I Like The Crotch On You." Could he have been anymore straight-forward?

So, R, much like O.J. before you, I'm officially giving up my long-standing defense of you and your, uh, eccentricities. It's time to put "12 Play" to bed. So to speak.

Don't forget his other clues of "Seems Like Your Ready" and his production of Aaliyah's "Age Ain't Nuthin' But a Number" Yikes!!! If those don't scream pedifile I don't know what does.

I read that quote yesterday, and I was like, WHAT? It's sad that he's a musical genius and a pedophile, all wrapped in one.

Yeah, "Age Ain't Nuthin But a Number" was a serious warning shot. I hate that he ruined poor lil' Aaliyah, yet another one of my teenage crushes, at such a young age.

And, yeah, Camille, R. Kelly is just another one of those tortured souls who knows how to make serious baby-making music. For whatever reason, I can't imagine him making it to 60.

Wait a minute ... I really don't know the story behind "Let's Get it On."

You might have to share that one with the class, Avery. I'm really curious.

But I understand where you're coming from: R can be hit or miss sometimes. However, something about "12 Play" and "Fiesta remix" and "Thoia Thoing" just speak to me.
