Half Man, Half Amazing

LeBron James:

At least a couple handful of times in my life, I've had the opportunity to play pick-up basketball with guys who were fringe NBA players, former college stars and playground hotshots.

Each time, I've come away with a newfound appreciation for the level of skill and athleticism it takes to become a top-notch basketball player. And at no point in any of those games were those guys going much more than half-speed. Yet they still dominated.

At the upper echelons of the game, the players almost cease to be human. J.J. Redick, a Washington General, or the 12th-man at your local college would certainly bust your ass. Most of them can do things with a basketball that would rival any dude off an And1 mixtape.

And then there's someone like LeBron, possibly the best basketball player in the world. He's so good, so big, so awesome, that he might singe your cerebral cortex.

i remember kenny smith once writing a column in SLAM where he was poo-pooing the And1 set.

"Steve Kerr will come to your playground or gym and give you 50. STEVE KERR WILL GIVE YOU 50, EASY."

he's right.

The 60 Minute segment gave me a new outlook on Lebron. I admit, prior to watching, I only knew 'the name' but wasn't up on his skill as a player. I heard that he was good, but never watched for myself. Needless to say, I was speechless after he hit the shot from waaaaaaaaaaay down court, using one hand...ball gliding through the air...nothing but net. Come on now. I can't even do that mess in my dreams! lol Let me stop lying, I can do it. I just hate to brag. lol

G.D., I read that column too. It's stuck with me to this day, and I remember it every time someone is going on and on about how, say, Redick or Psycho T or (insert white Duke star here) sucks.

Yeah. Kerr would give them dudes 50 - only if he got tired. He might drop 60 or 70 on them.

And Bougie, c'mon now. Let go of those dreams. Lol.

That said, the 60 Minutes segment sort of disappointed me. It was sort of a primer for people who'd never heard of LeBron before, I guess. Maybe I just have no concept of how few people know about LBJ outside of the world of hoops. Who knows?
